Why Your Electricity Bill Keeps Climbing in South Africa (and What Actually Stops It)
Electricity tariffs in South Africa have risen far faster than general inflation for well over a decade. That single fact changes the arithmetic on solar more than any technology improvement has, and it works in a direction most people get backwards.
Why your bill climbs even when your usage does not
Three things move independently on a municipal bill, and only one of them is your consumption.
- The energy charge, in rand per kWh, which rises at each annual increase.
- Fixed and capacity charges, which you pay whether you use anything or not, and which have grown as a share of the total.
- Inclining block tariffs, where the rate per unit steps up past certain monthly thresholds, so the last units you use cost considerably more than the first.
That last point is the one people miss. If you are in a high block, the units solar displaces are your most expensive units, not your average ones. The saving per kWh displaced is better than a naive calculation suggests.
Work out your real rate, not the headline one
Take the total rand on your bill and divide it by the kWh billed. That is your effective rate, and it is higher than the tariff table because it includes the fixed charges. It is the only number worth using in a payback calculation.
Do this for a summer month and a winter month. The gap tells you how seasonal your consumption is, which matters when you size the battery.
Why every increase shortens your payback
Payback is total installed cost divided by annual saving. The cost is fixed on the day you buy. The saving is not: it rises with every tariff increase, because you are avoiding a more expensive unit each year.
Two consequences follow, and they point the same way.
Waiting does not help. Deferring a purchase to “see what prices do” means paying the higher tariff in the meantime while the equipment cost stays broadly flat. The delay is the cost.
A conservative estimate is the right one. If a system pays back in six years assuming tariffs never rise again, it will in practice pay back sooner. Model it flat, then treat every increase as upside rather than building an optimistic escalation into the business case.

Where the saving actually comes from
In rough order of value per rand spent:
- Displacing evening consumption with stored solar. This is the expensive block, so it is the highest-value kWh you can avoid buying.
- Displacing daytime consumption directly. Straightforward, and it needs no battery.
- Reducing your peak demand, which matters on commercial tariffs with a demand charge and not at all on a simple domestic one.
- Export. Where your municipality allows it, feed-in usually pays considerably less per unit than you pay to buy, so it is a bonus rather than a business case.
That ordering is why battery sizing deserves more thought than panel count. Panels alone cut the cheap part of your bill.
A worked payback, with the assumptions stated
Substitute your own numbers, because these are illustrative rather than a promise. A home paying an effective R4.50 a unit on 600kWh a month spends about R2 700. A system that displaces half of that saves roughly R1 350 a month, or R16 200 a year. Against a package price of about R51 000 plus installation, that is a payback in the region of four to five years, assuming tariffs never rise again. They will, so treat that as the pessimistic case.
Frequently asked questions
Should I wait for prices to come down before buying solar?
Equipment prices have been broadly stable, while tariffs have not. Waiting means paying the higher tariff in the interim. If the system makes sense on today’s numbers, delay mostly costs money.
Does solar protect me from future increases?
It reduces your exposure in proportion to how much of your consumption you displace. It does not eliminate it while you remain grid-connected, because fixed charges continue.
What payback period is reasonable?
Model it with flat tariffs and see whether the number is acceptable. If it is, real-world increases will improve on it.
