5kW and 6kW Solar System Prices in South Africa (2026): What They Cost and What They Save

A 5kW hybrid system is the most common starting point for a South African home, and the most commonly mis-sold. This is what one contains, what it costs in 2026, and how to work out what it will actually save you rather than what a brochure claims.

What is actually in a 5kW solar package

A complete package is four things, matched to work together:

  • A 5kW hybrid inverter. Runs your loads, charges the battery, and switches to backup when the grid drops.
  • A battery. Usually 5.12kWh at this size, stored energy for after dark and for outages.
  • Five 600W-class panels. Roughly 3kWp of array.
  • Roof mounting for tile, IBR or cliplock.

What it does not include is the installation itself, the cabling, the distribution board work and the protection devices. Those are quoted for your specific site, because they depend on your roof, your board and how far the inverter sits from it.

Notice the 6kW packages. The Deye 6kW costs R670 more than the Deye 5kW and gives you an extra panel and more inverter headroom. At this end of the range, stepping up a size is usually the cheapest upgrade you will ever buy.

How to work out your own saving

Ignore any figure quoted without your consumption in it. Here is the arithmetic, which takes about five minutes with a bill in front of you.

  1. Find your monthly kWh on your statement. Divide by 30 for your daily use.
  2. Find your effective rate. Divide the total rand amount by the kWh billed. This includes fixed charges, so it is higher than the headline tariff and it is the number that matters.
  3. Estimate what solar displaces. A 3kWp array in most of South Africa generates in the region of 12kWh to 14kWh on a good day and materially less in mid-winter. A 5.12kWh battery shifts roughly 4.5kWh of that into the evening.
  4. Multiply. Displaced kWh times your effective rate equals your monthly saving.

A worked example, with the assumptions stated so you can substitute your own: a home using 600kWh a month at an effective R4.50 a unit pays about R2 700. If the system displaces 300kWh of that, the saving is about R1 350 a month. Your rate and your generation will differ, so run the numbers on your own bill rather than borrowing this one.

What a 5kW system will not do

Honesty here saves disappointment later. A 5kW inverter with a 5.12kWh battery will not:

  • Run a geyser element and an oven simultaneously. That is a 6kW to 8kW conversation.
  • Take you off-grid. It is a hybrid, sized to reduce your bill and carry you through outages, not to disconnect you.
  • Carry a heavy load through a long winter night. 5.12kWh is roughly one evening of normal household use, not two days of autonomy.
  • Cover three-phase supply. If your property is three-phase, you need a three-phase inverter.

Should you buy 5kW or 6kW?

Buy the 6kW if any of the following are true: you have a pool pump, you have more than one geyser, you run a home office with a heavy printer or workshop tools, or you expect to add an electric vehicle within five years. The price difference is small and the inverter is the hardest component to upgrade later.

Buy the 5kW if your consumption is genuinely modest, your loads are staggered, and your budget is the binding constraint.

Can I add more battery later?

On most modern platforms, yes. Check the specific inverter’s supported battery capacity and whether the battery brand allows stacking before you buy, because this is exactly where cheap systems become dead ends.

Will it keep the lights on during load-shedding?

Yes. A hybrid inverter switches to battery automatically. How long it lasts depends on what you are running, not on the inverter size. 5.12kWh will carry lights, plugs, Wi-Fi, TV and a fridge comfortably through a normal outage.
