Hybrid vs Off-Grid Solar in South Africa: Which One Do You Actually Need?
Most South Africans asking for an off-grid system actually want a hybrid one. The words get used interchangeably, they mean very different things, and the gap between them is tens of thousands of rand.
The difference in one paragraph
A hybrid system stays connected to the grid. It runs your home off solar and battery when it can, tops up from the grid when it cannot, and carries you through outages automatically. An off-grid system has no grid connection at all. Everything you use, on every day of the year, has to come from your own panels and your own battery, including the worst week of winter.
That last clause is what makes off-grid expensive. You are not sizing for an average day. You are sizing for the worst realistic run of bad days, plus a generator for when the design assumption fails.

Why going off-grid rarely pays
Three reasons, in order of how often they catch people out.
The last 10% costs the most. Covering 90% of your consumption with solar and battery is straightforward. Covering the final 10%, the sunless week in July, requires roughly doubling the array and the battery. That capacity then sits idle for the other eleven months.
You lose the cheapest backstop you have. A grid connection is, in effect, an unlimited battery you only pay for when you use it. Disconnecting means replacing it with hardware you own, maintain and eventually replace.
Generators are not free. Almost every real off-grid installation ends up with one, plus fuel, servicing and noise. Budget for it honestly or the design is fiction.
When off-grid genuinely is the answer
- The property has no connection and a new one has been quoted at a price comparable to the solar system itself.
- The site is remote enough that the line would be long, expensive and vulnerable.
- Supply is so unreliable that it cannot be relied on as a backstop even for planning purposes.
If none of those apply, hybrid is very likely the correct answer, and you will get better value per rand from it.
What a hybrid system gives you
- Lower bills. Solar covers daytime load, battery covers the evening peak.
- Load-shedding cover. The changeover is automatic. Most households do not notice the transition.
- Room to grow. Add battery capacity later as consumption rises, without replacing the inverter, provided you chose a modular platform.
- A cheaper entry point. You can start at 5kW and expand rather than committing to full autonomy up front.
